Woke up this morning to the news of the mass shooting in Buffalo, NY and all I could do was cry as the weight of despair pressed down hard on my current grief.
When Black people are killed like this, all of us Black people feel it viscerally. We collectively share the generational trauma from being hunted and exterminated for centuries. Every time it happens our grief stretches back through time and the weight of it feels unbearable.
Some of our lawmakers do not believe white supremacy is a domestic terrorist threat, or that it even exists. Some of them believe the right to bear arms is worth more than the right to live. Black people are dying every day because of it yet nothing is being done. Once again it feels as if we do not matter.
But know this: we are a resilient people. Together we will mourn, together we will weep. Together we will also survive and thrive. We will continue to rise up in consciousness and compassion and courage and create our best lives. We will not let hate win. Justice is ours.
But today, it hurts so goddamn much.
